Highlights From The Meeting

The Neighborhood Watch meeting was a success. Officer Gilbert's presentation this time was to give residents of our neighborhood the chance to answer any and all questions they had regarding the police and law enforcement. Many topics were covered. A few residents had been to the Citizens' Police Academy and encouraged others to attend.

Please feel free to make comments on this post regarding information presented at the meeting.

Lots could be said if everyones comments would be posted. The only things that should not be allowed to be seen are any types of profanities or unacceptable behaviors on here. I think that people should stay out of everyone elses business unless it affects their lives in someway. Just because a loud car or motorcycle goes by or children are playing (like normal children should do) doesn't bother me at all! Why do these simple little things seem to affect certain people? I have heard that some people say that this neighborhood is going to hell. Well I would love for them people to go down to Southtown and live for a couple years and see just how bad Woodglen Acres really is!!!

I generally post all the comments. I once took one down at the request of several neighbors. Let's remember, though, this website's purpose is also to build our community up.

With regard to your comments about our neighborhood and the motorcycles/children, I respect your opinion. However, I do share the concerns voiced at the meeting. First and foremost, my desire is to see that all children in our neighborhood stay safe. I believe I stand with the majority with regard to loud motorcycles. I'm trying to keep our neighborhood from going downhill. My position is that I do not want our neighborhood to end up in the same shape as some other neighborhoods in the city. Yes, this is a proactive approach, but it is what I feel is the right thing to do. I hope you respect my opinion.

Now that school has started, let's be sure to slow down and watch for the children at the bus stops.

i know this is a little late but i could not really find a spot to put it on your web site. Okay here it goes we moved here for our children i thought it would be a great area. So far I have met very few nice people. However I am finding out that older couples r saying that my kids have different dads which they do not. And that we leave r children home alone which is so not true I just expected this out of younger people not older people i just think you (and u know who u r) should feel ashamed of yourself.
Thank you

This is the first time that I have signed into this blog. I am impressed with the blog presentation and hope it continues. Many thanks to the ones who has started this blog and to the ones who have initiated and handled the neighborhood watch meetings. I intended to attend the last meeting but could not as I had unexpected company come in.
I just wanted to give my opinion on this neighborhood as I feel I have a right as I have lived here since 1990. Not many people can say that. It has been a wonderful neighborhood to raise my children. I moved here for the sole purpose for my children to start school here due to the busing system and the sidewalks. My son started kindergarten here and he is now 25. I would still recommend this neighborhood to anyone. It may not be the most elite place to live but certainly is not the worst. Keep up the good work everyone!!--Marla

Ryan,

What exactly is the opinion of "the majority" when it comes to motorcycles in OUR neighborhood? My fiancee and I are Harley riders, and infact, I just bought my own last week. We have been circling the neighborhood so I can get more comfortable on my bike before getting it out on the highway. So I ask you, what's the problem? We ride mainly on the weekend and always during daylight hours. I could sit here and JUDGE people for constantly parking on the road and making me drive around them, for not mowing their grass soon enough, for not weed-eating, or for many more reasons that I find annoying. However, I'm not so petty!! All people are different, and that includes people's hobbies.

Ryan and Amy October 10, 2009 at 8:29 PM

Heather,
To answer your first question, let me first reference the previous post so we are agreeing on context. “Anonymous” wondered why loud motorcycles affect people. Someone had brought this up at the meeting, and it was my opinion, based on how the group reacted, that the majority of those in attendance felt that loud motorcycles in our neighborhood constitute a problem. I suppose I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Your second question was, “What’s the problem?” To begin with, I have no idea if the concern was directed at you, and I am in no way judging you personally. This is my position, and I speak only for myself. You have a lawful right to your hobby until it infringes upon another’s lawful right, namely, a degree of peace and quiet that is customary of a residential neighborhood. Is this “petty?” In my opinion, not when you wake up someone’s sleeping baby, and not when you wake up someone who sleeps during the daytime because they work at night. I love to play my music really, really loud! So why don’t I? Because my neighbor sleeps during the daytime, and I know my other neighbors would find it offensive and annoying. It would be disrespectful for me to infringe upon their rights by playing my music really loud. At some point, it would also become unlawful. I too find the other issues you mentioned annoying, but I bet you wouldn’t find them “petty” if you needed to sell your house in this neighborhood. How would you feel if you had your house was on the market for a year, and you had to decrease your price because other people are letting things slide? Not so petty when it costs you thousands of dollars. In the few years that I have lived here, I have seen things go downhill. This is quickly becoming a renting neighborhood, and people are fleeing quickly. I have turned 3 houses in the past and done well. I didn’t think I could go wrong in this neighborhood. My original plan was to fix this house up and sell it. But, the neighborhood was so great, we decided to stay. Now, I’m beginning to wonder if I made the right decision. Thank you for your comment Heather. I hope I have not offended you, and I hope you keep reading this blog. Perhaps on this issue we will agree to disagree, but if so, please know that I still respect you and your opinion.

Wondering when my previous message will be posted... it has been almost a week.

What's the point in having a blog if our posts do not show up??

Anonymous October 17, 2009 at 11:48 AM

I can see her post. I wonder why she can't?

Heather October 17, 2009 at 2:16 PM

Let's try this again, since apparently my post responding to you did not go through....

Ryan,

To address the last message you left for me...

I want to begin by saying my fiancée works midnights, and sleeps during the day. He is woken up by loud cars, lawn mowers, barking dogs, children yelling, etc. Are you and the neighborhood watch going to start regulating when all these actions can occur? Are you going to tell me that I can not let my dogs out in my fenced-in back yard because they may bark? Are we in this neighborhood going to regulate when lawns can be mowed?? If that be the case, the only time some one is not sleeping in my household is during the hours of 7:00pm to 8:30pm. I hope everyone has headlights on their mowers!!!

As for you and your music... you can still listen to music without playing it really, really loud. I can not ride my motorcycle without getting it out of my garage and down the street. There truly is NO comparison.

As for the tangent that you went off on about selling houses, I think we live in a great community! It is NOT because I have a motorcycle that you and others can not sell a house. I find it insulting that you would insinuate that it is my fault, or that of your neighbors. If people are not selling houses, there is a multitude of reasons why. The bad economy has hit Mount Vernon, just like the rest of the country!! If there is something that a neighbor might could be doing differently to help you (or someone else) sell a house the best method would be to talk to the neighbor, not complain about them when they are not around! You teach high school sir, you are not IN high school.

Ryan, I do hope that I have not offended you, but as you can see I too have a strong opinion on the subject. I do not think that the majority of the people in this neighborhood were at your meeting. There are over 100 houses in this neighborhood, and from the picture, it appears that a small fraction were actually represented for this "majority opinion". Why do you think that is? No one on my street came because we do not want to sit there listening to people complaining about members of this community. The point in a neighborhood watch is to watch OUT for your neighbors, not watch them!

Ryan and Amy October 17, 2009 at 8:40 PM

Heather,
The neighborhood watch and I have zero power to "regulate" anything. The comparison between the motorcycles and the music is that they are both loud! I personally am not going to tell you anything. If motorcycles become a problem to me, I will call the police and let them decide if anyone is breaking the law or not. If they are not, then my problem is with the city for allowing loud motorcycles in a residential neighborhood.

Go back and read my post. I never said your motorcycle was preventing anyone from selling a house. Believe me, if I had my house for sale, and I lived next to some of the houses here, I would be talking with them. But, it's a neighborhood issue. I have not mentioned anyone by name, so I'm not talking behind anyone's back. In fact, by being on this blog, everything is out in the open. I could probably be doing more myself to make things look better here too. You mentioned the issue of the vehicles being in the road. I sometimes park in the road, and now I'm going to think about that a little more next time. See how this works? It's a good thing!

I never said the majority of the people in the neighborhood were at the meeting! Most people were not there. I simply made reference to the "majority of those in attendance." There is a big difference there, and again, go back and reread the post.

You are most definitely right, the point in the neighborhood watch IS to watch out for your neighbors. But, honestly, when the officer asks, "How are things in the neighborhood going," people are going talk about what's on their minds. Officer Gilbert does a great job of guiding the discussions, but he can't tell people what they can and cannot talk about. The motorcycle issue conversation lasted about 20 seconds as I recall, and no one was mentioned by name. I just listened. I don't even know you. You are really making a big deal out of this, and I was wondering why until you made reference to my job. So, with that, let's put this to rest.

Heather October 18, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Ryan,

I apologize for apparently striking a nerve with you. I have no clue what you concluded with reference to your job, but am intrigued on how you perceived it. I was clearly trying to say, we should handle the situation as mature adults, not children.

I am making a big deal about the situation because I too had decorations stolen from my house at the same time 3 other houses were hit. When I logged on to this site, I saw nothing in reference to the recent crime spree, only proof of neighbors complaining about each other. How sad! Once again, I do apologize for addressing you personally, but I wanted to make my point. Too often we let small differences between us get in the way of what is truly a problem.

Ryan and Amy October 18, 2009 at 1:33 PM

Heather,
as soon as I learned about the yard decorations being stolen I posted it. I'm sorry I didn't have it up there when you logged in. Let me think about that for a little while. Maybe there is a way that I can have something on the top of the page where people can notify me so I can get it on here faster. I do get the newspaper and I try to read the police reports.

This is all new to me and I'm learning as I go. I am open to suggestions.

sounds like democrat vs republican on here. republican wants peace but wont quit fighting. democrat takes the high road

Ryan and Amy October 20, 2009 at 10:27 AM

Anonymous, I appreciate that you see me as taking the high road. However, I have to point out that I generally vote Republican. :)

Anonymous,

LOL!! Very funny in many different ways!

We should get together and talk politics some time!
