Fall Meeting

If anyone wants to work on Neighborhood Watch Float for the parade, contact JoAnn Tyler from the Summersville group. E-mail me and I will give you her information if you don't have it. Also, we need to have a meeting. If anyone is interested in hosting, please let me know. We have not set a date for it yet. Sorry I have not been posting much, just so busy these days. If anyone would like to take an active role in this group, I would welcome the help.

Sharing Information

It's been a while since I've posted, so I thought I would share a little information I found from Neighborhoodlink.com.

"Neighborhood Watch is not just about crime prevention. It is about getting to know neighbors and enhancing the quality of life in the neighborhood. An important goal at neighborhood meetings is to learn more about each other so neighbors are available to help each other during difficult times."

When it's cold like this, it's easy to stay inside. But, it won't be long until Spring gets here and we can all get out and enjoy our neighborhood again! Let's make this year the best we can for our neighborhood watch!

Holiday Safety Tips

Hey everyone, doesn't our neighborhood look great with all the Christmas lights! Someone asked that I share some Holiday Safety tips. I came across these ideas and suggestions from "The Lakes at Red Rock Homeowners Association" in Leesburg, Virginia. I thought I would pass them along!

Remember, whether you are leaving the house to go shopping or out for an evening of parties, lock your doors and windows! Do not leave the drapes or curtains open with your presents in plain view. Presents displayed around your hall can be a pretty sight, but can also be quite tempting to burglars. It’s better to scatter the gifts around the house, in closets or cupboards, where they can’t be so easily seen.

If you are leaving town for the holidays, make sure your home appears occupied. Leave inside and outside lights on timers and have your neighbors pick up newspapers, mail, and take flyers off your door. Ask neighbors to park in your driveway. Put a timer on a talk radio station for several hours a day.

After the holidays, do not put out empty boxes advertising your new purchases (VCR’s, microwaves, etc.). Break them down and put them in the trash cans or in garbage bags. Better still, take them to a recycling bin.

When you’re shopping, use the trunk of your car to keep your packages out of sight. Keep your car locked at all times. Be sure to make several trips to your car to deposit packages in the trunk. Don’t allow yourself to become so burdened down with packages that you become a tempting target. When walking through parking lots, be sure that you are aware of your surroundings. Walk with authority. Do not look like a victim!

Be aware that thieves and pickpockets also do some of their biggest business during the holiday season. Ladies, do not dangle your handbag from your shoulder. You are creating a perfect setup for a snatch thief. Instead, keep your purse tucked tightly under your arm. Better yet, do not even carry a purse. Place your checkbook, cash, or credit cards in your front pockets. Avoid carrying your checkbook, cash, and credit cards all together in one wallet, because if a thief gets the whole package together, they can cash checks with your identification and run up a large credit card bill in a short amount of time.

Never give your credit card number over the telephone to anyone when you did not initiate the call. And be sure that you are dealing with a reputable company when ordering merchandise over the phone.

Do not “flash” large rolls of money in public. You never know who’s watching! Also, spread your money around in different pockets. That way a pickpocket can’t clean you out in one fell swoop. If you go to an automatic teller machine, try to go during the daylight hours. If you must go at night, pick a machine that is well lighted and visible to passing traffic. If anyone is lurking near the machine, pass it up and find another.

When dining out valet parking is nice, but don’t be too lax. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle or your house key with the attendant.

Just by using a little planning and some good old common sense, most holiday crimes can be avoided. Remember that if you have to drive, do NOT drink!

Watch Alert!

I got this e-mail today:

This morning a man was near my fence trying to pet my dogs. I noticed that he had a leash in his hand. After 3-4 minutes I asked what he was doing. He claimed that he thought one of my dogs was his lost dog and he was just checking. I am afraid that he was trying to steal my dogs. Watch out for your animals this weekend. The man was late 50's, white and heavy set. He was driving a dark truck we think the license plate was 5023 FX. We notified the police. I hope this prevents any problems in our neighborhood.

Neighborhood Watch Potluck

A special thank you to the Summersville Neighborhood Watch for sponsoring the potluck. The food was terrific, and it was nice to meet with the other groups. Mayor Chesley, Sheriff Mulch, Officer Gilbert, and the police chaplain greeted the groups. I counted about 5 people there to represent Woodglen Acres. Maybe next year we can have more in attendance! :)

Boy Scouts and Fliers

The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts both will be picking up food on Saturday November 21 for their annual Scouting for Food drive. All food picked up in Mt. V will benefit Mt. V food pantries. This is a great way to give for the holidays. Just put any non-perishables on your front step by 9:00 am and a scout will be there to pick it up.

Also, everyone should have received a flier about the Potluck.

Trick or Treat

This is just a reminder, that Mt. Vernon trick-or-treating will be from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. There will be many children around the neighborhood. I believe it has been the custom to turn your porch light on if you would like them to stop at your house. Everyone have a safe night!
